Troubling Headlines: What’s the Good News?

Gathered In His Name

Resized Newspaper Headlines 7-18-26

July 23, 2026

Photo: National newspaper headlines from July 18, 2026, capture images and the impact of smoke-filled skies across the U.S., including in the Washington, D.C. area, originating from Canadian wildfires. Also shown: flooding in Texas and other natural disasters that signal creation’s groaning.

For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that[a] the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God. 22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. (Romans 8:19-22, NIV)

On Saturday, July 18, 2026 our Gathered in His Name Intercessory Prayer and Outreach group used the news headlines of the day as our prayer focus. We originally planned to walk the Capital Crescent Trail which extends 11 miles from Georgetown in the District of Columbia, to Silver Spring, Maryland (we planned to meet midway in Bethesda, Maryland), where we would hand out snacks and water to refresh people we would meet along the way. However, because of the hazardous air quality in our area (Code Purple—unhealthy for everyone) caused by the Ontario wildfires (with more than 100 million people across the U.S. and Canada under air quality alerts) along with the possibility of storms, we moved our gathering indoors.

We were delighted to welcome two new members, Angela and Shannon, who both expressed a desire to grow deeper in prayer and draw closer to the Lord. Moving indoors also allowed our member David to join us as he recovers from surgery, which was a blessing.

The above referenced scripture from Romans 8:19-22, led us to share the burdens that were on our hearts, what grieved, concerned and vexed our spirit, as headlines of natural disasters, reports of corruption, injustice, lawlessness, and overall sin abounding. Sin that has caused all creation to fall from the perfect state in which God created it; a creation that groans, a world subject to frustration and bondage to death and decay so that it cannot fulfill its intended purpose. These are not isolated events. They are reminders that we live in a fallen world.

Yet the headlines are not the final word. We are encouraged that although, “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” (Isaiah 40:8, NIV)

Rather than becoming overwhelmed and discouraged by the headlines, we brought each burden before the Lord in prayer. We prayed for the safety of firefighters and first responders who place themselves in harm’s way to help protect and care for others. We prayed for godly leadership to be represented in all levels of government and public service. We repented and asked God’s forgiveness for our sins for however we have contributed to the brokenness of our world. We prayed that all would be reconciled to God through relationship with Jesus Christ. We prayed for teachers, mentors and the next generation. We prayed for those who are grieving, discouraged or suffering. We prayed for Believers to persevere in faith and to keep their hope. We prayed for unity within the Body of Christ. With more work than workers, we prayed that God would raise up more workers for the harvest and for those who have been long in the work to receive rest, renewal and spiritual refreshment. We prayed for our future church home. We also prayed for our sister Angela for career guidance, providing her with godly counsel and practical steps.

The Good News!

Headlines change. Leaders change. Nations rise and fall. Crises come and go. But the Word of the Lord endures forever. God’s promises remain steadfast through every generation.

Rather than allowing the headlines to define our perspective, we allow God’s Word to shape our response. The headlines may report fear, uncertainty, division, suffering, and brokenness, but Scripture proclaims hope, redemption, and the certainty that Christ is making all things new.

Jesus Himself reminds us:

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Nor did He tell us simply to watch the headlines. He taught us to pray:

“Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

Rather than becoming distracted, discouraged, or defeated by the headlines, we bring them before the throne of God. Every headline becomes an invitation to pray for God’s Kingdom to break into our communities, our nation, and our world.

So what news are we declaring in prayer?

We are declaring the greatest news ever proclaimed:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

That is God’s answer to every headline of sin, suffering, division, disaster, and death. The Gospel declares that God has not abandoned His creation. Through Jesus Christ, He came to redeem what was broken by the Fall, reconcile people to Himself, and offer the hope of eternal life to all who believe.

As we pray, we proclaim that hope. We pray that hearts would turn to Christ, that people would repent and receive His saving grace, and that many would confess with their mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in their hearts that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9–10). We pray that God’s Kingdom would come and His will would be done on earth as it is in heaven.

The headlines remind us that creation is groaning. The Gospel reminds us that Christ has overcome the world. And we live with joyful anticipation of the day He will return to make all things new.

Receive and tell the Good News and keep your hope!
